Seven Spirit-Days to Make Winter Break Come Sooner

By: Tekle Skiles-Januta

With three whole weeks until my Winter Break, it feels like the days just keep coming out of nowhere—I am positive that November 30 was not observed last year. Still, while the days keep getting longer and harder to stay awake, somebody besides me needs to find a way to take some of my burden away. School Administration: please take some notes—these days might get me to Winter Break.

1. Nap Day

Instead of taking my usual 4PM nap, why not integrate it into the school day? I know that I’m not the only one sleeping away the blues of Chemistry. To be a real spirit day, Nap Day must include a one hour minimum block for sleeping, lullabies played over the loudspeaker, and the dresscode to be suspended for the remainder of the week.

2. True Pajama Day

Ok, I am done with cute pajamas. Sure, I’ll wear my cute sweats to school, but is that really what I’m wearing to sleep? Everytime we have a pajama day, my eyes are burdened with frilly tank tops, monogrammed bath robes, and matching sets. Yes, you heard me right. Matching. Sets. During the school equivalent of the Dark Ages—characterized by mental fog, dark humor, and the ever-approaching sunset—students are pulling themselves together in order to wear MATCHING SETS. On this day, come to school in your “True” pajamas. Tattered pants? Stained shirt? That's what I want to see.

3. Beach Day

This day really depends on your school. If you live in sunny California, this is a fantastic option for a school-sponsored day on the Pacific Ocean. But, If you happen to live in the Cornhusker state of Nebraska, implore your Administrators to take your school to the nearest ocean, preferably in an Eras Tour-esque configuration of vans. This Beach Day could potentially include weeks of school-sponsored days off, all to your benefit.

4. Ditch Day

What’s better than ditching a day off of school? Ditching a day that you aren’t penalised for! Inspire your Administration to allow an abundance of unexcused absences, letting you take an extra day off to nap or finish that homework that was due back on Halloween.

5. Daylight Savings Observance Day

I don’t know about you, but I am OVER Daylight Savings. To me, a true sunset should occur daily at around 7PM. Unfortunately, Mother Nature has not been pulling through. I do not appreciate this sudden swap. No matter when it happens, a Daylight Savings Observance Day would give a period of adjustment to the already-frazzled students of your school. For this day, I would recommend all teachers to turn off all of the lights in their rooms and give you a chance to nap; waking up with a bright and true understanding of Daylight Savings.

6. Return-to-Kindergarten Day

During this day, nothing will feel harder than counting with blocks. A Return-To-Kindergarten day gives the tortured students’ brains a break with the additions of Arts and Crafts, snack time, and a Kindergarten level of communication—no deep conversations will be permitted! After this day, your brain will feel as young as it did on the first day of school. Hopefully, this rejuvenation will last you until Winter Break.

7. “A Taste of Break” Day

This day is really up to what your students most require. If you mostly sleep during break, feel free to do that! If you like to stress yourself out over homework, good choices! And if you want to watch a movie and drink hot chocolate in your Head of School’s backyard, that is doable too! “A Taste of Break” is meant to give you just that—a vision of your slow-approaching reality for two graceful weeks. Enjoy!
